If you have children with a disability, they are entitled to receive an education in a mainstream school if that is your wish.

Need help?

The Victorian Department of Education provides resources to government schools to help educate students with disabilities and impairments. Children with a disability are assisted through regular program support group meetings, held regularly to track the measures in place to help the child learn, monitor progress and foster communication between parents/carers and teachers.

Many parents find it helpful to arrange advocacy support for these meetings, and for other interactions with the school. If issues arise that cannot be resolved, these organisations can help:

Association for Children with a Disability (ACD)

ACD is an information, support and advocacy organisation for families of children with a disability in Victoria, Australia. The organisation is run by parents of children with a disability - most of the staff and committee are parents - so they know what it means to have a child with a disability. ACD covers all types of disability and is a non-profit organisation.

For more information visit the ACD website.
